Boy, 10, dies after forklift rolls into ditch on Alberta farm: RCMP

A 10-year-old boy is dead following a farming accident near Killam, Alta. Saturday morning.

RCMP said the boy was driving a forklift on the family farm at around 11 a.m. when the machine drove into a ditch and rolled. People in the area quickly tried to administer first aid, but the boy suffered serious injuries and died on scene.

RCMP are investigating, but believe the young boy lost control of the forklift while driving on a gravel road.

Family members told police the boy had used it before, and knew how to operate the machine.

Earlier this year, three young girls died following an incident at a family-owned farm near Withrow, Alta.. Sisters Catie, 13, Dara, 11, and Jana, 11, were playing on a truck loaded with canola at a rural property 15 kilometres east of Rocky Mountain House when they were buried by the seed.

Two of the girls were pronounced dead at the scene. The third young girl died early the following morning.

Killam is located about 165 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.

The boy’s name is not being released.
