SASKATOON – For the average Saskatonian, snow isn’t a big deal. For some newcomers to Canada it’s a different story.
“It’s really cold, but I think in December it will be more cold so I’m really excited to know how cold it will be,” says Grade 7 student Sehrish Aftab.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Saskatoon hosted a ‘newcomers session’ on Saturday to teach winter driving tips and cold weather safety.
It’s Namme Noman’s second winter in Saskatoon and he says he learned a lot the first time, “I’m so careful when I’m driving on the road. I’m so careful. I do not sudden brake, I push the brake, gradually brake and keep at a distance to the other vehicles.”

For young Sehrish Aftab winter isn’t all bad, she is excited to learn new winter sports, “I can learn snowboarding because my friends they learned it and says it’s really easy.”
It may be cold outside, but those at the event say the kind welcome they’ve received is heart warming.
“The people here are very, very cooperative and I’ve been overwhelmed by the support of the people here,” says Hibatullah, Edwards School of Business student.
This warm welcome will also be extended to refugees coming to Canada before the end of the year. A local immigration agency can’t confirm when the refugees will start arriving or how many, but when they do sessions like this will definitely help them learn the ins and outs of Old Man Winter.
