‘Successful turnout’ at Hijab Day Halifax

HALIFAX – More than one hundred people showed up at the central library to show support for the Muslim community and learn about the hijab.

“Very successful turnout thank you to everyone that came,” said Maram Saidi, one of the organizers of Hijab Day Halifax in a Facebook post.

At the event, Saidi said the goal was to cut through the many misconceptions around the hijab.

“We figured you know, a  lot of people don’t really know what the hijab is, so we thought this would be a good time to bring the community together, to acknowledge our differences and spread awareness and see if anyone has questions, answer questions,” said Saidi.

The event had a station where people could try on the hijab, and there was also a panel discussion about it.

Shannon Langton and her daughter both tried on the hijab, she said it was important to bring her daughter to the event.

“I want her to know that everyone deserves love and just because people might wear different things doesn’t make them different from her,” said Langton.
