PENTICTON — A decade ago, the Penticton Indian Band’s (PIB) economy was stagnating and young people were moving away to find work. But today, the situation is completely different for the community.
This year alone it has won two national awards for its economic development.
Chief Jonathan Kruger beams with pride as he looks at the band’s Economic Developer of the Year trophy.
“Out of 633 (First Nations) communities, we got voted and we came out on top so I’m very proud of that,” he says.
The award was presented to the PIB at a national conference in Toronto recently among business leaders and other First Nations.
Earlier this year, the PIB also won an Aboriginal Economic Development Corporation Award.
