Number of Albertans collecting EI doubles in one year

The latest figures on employment insurance benefits paint a stark picture of the struggles now facing Alberta’s workforce.

Nearly 58,000 Albertans were collecting EI benefits in September. That’s a 9.9 per cent increase from August, and nearly double the number who were collecting EI just a year ago.

The biggest increase in claimants was among tradespeople and transportation and equipment operators, up 13.3 per cent from August.

The number of people collecting EI in Alberta has been increasingly steadily since June of 2014.

September’s figures represent the highest number of people in the province collecting employment insurance since January of 2010, when the figure hit 58,550.
