EDMONTON – A vigil for the victims of the Paris attacks was held at 7 p.m. at La Cité Francophone in Edmonton on Monday. It is being organized by the Francophone Association of Alberta.
“We’re really a long distance away and it’s important for us to personalize it here locally so that we prevent and eliminate the notion of fear,” said Jean Johnson, president of the association.
He said six or seven people spoke at the event.
“Speaking from the heart of what this means. We’ll be lighting candles and taking a moment of pause, of silence, in memory of those who have lost their lives.”

Johnson said it’s also important for the community to come together in times of grief.
“It’s a way to unify la Francophonie in Edmonton around a really tough time.”

Across Europe on Monday, a minute of silence was held to mourn the victims of the terrorist attacks in Paris.
Crowds gathered at makeshift memorials in many cities across Europe to join in solidarity with France to honour the 129 victims of the terrorist attacks that rocked Paris Friday evening.

All of Alberta’s party leaders offered their condolences to the victims and their families during Question Period.
