A magnitude-7.0 earthquake has occurred off the coast of Japan.
Initially, the U.S. Geological Service estimates that two had struck: one measuring magnitude-7, the second 6.5. They have since updated the information and are reporting it as a magnitude-7.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued tsunami warnings for several of its coastal regions saying that waves up to a metre could reach the coast of Kagoshima prefecture on Kyushu and other islands.
In 2011 a magnitude-9 shook northeastern Japan, causing a massive tsunami that killed more than 15,000 people and left more than 200,000 homeless.
