CALGARY – Captain Nichola Goddard was among the fallen soldiers remembered Monday at a special ceremony at Ernest Manning High School.
Goddard was killed in Afghanistan nearly 10 years ago. She was the first female Canadian soldier to be killed in combat during the conflict.
Goddard’s mother, Sally, flew to Calgary from Prince Edward Island to help mark Remembrance Day.

“Nichola believed that the military’s job was to create a stable environment so development work could take place. Nichola once told her father ‘I do what I do so you can do what you do,’” Sally said.
Nichola’s mother told students her daughter died fighting for something she believed in.  She read a letter sent from the battlefield.
“It seems to me that we have such a burden of responsibility, to make the world a better place for those who were born into far worse circumstances… It is very humbling to be here – part of something so much bigger than myself. Love as always, Nichola.
Sally Goddard will speak at another Calgary school named after her daughter Tuesday.
