Police, Search & Rescue, team up to search for evidence in shooting

COLE HARBOUR, NS — RCMP and volunteers with Halifax Ground Search and Rescue spent Saturday combing through a Cole Harbour neighbourhood, looking for any evidence they could find connected to a recent shooting.

“It’s just one of those things that they cover off as part of a routine investigation to do a thorough search of the area, just looking for any evidence that wasn’t noted previously,” said Sgt. Mike Lidstone, RCMP.

Merrimac Drive was rocked by a brazen, daytime shooting earlier this week. Shortly before 9:30 a.m. Thursday, a 22-year-old man was sitting in his vehicle when he was suddenly shot through the driver’s side window.

The incident prompted nearby schools and some businesses to go into lockdown while police searched for the shooter. The victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. “I understand that his injuries are very serious,” Sgt. Lidstone tells Global News.

The shooter took off and remains at large. Police have called the incident “disturbing” and say they do not believe it was a random act. While investigators continue to search for the man responsible for the shooting, they are also still working to collect evidence.

19 volunteer searchers used metal detectors to search wooded areas near the crime scene, looking for any clues they could find to help police piece together the case.

“They’ve been very, very, helpful the last few times they’ve found evidence that was very crucial in our investigation,” Lidstone says of Halifax Ground Search and Rescue. “They are invaluable.”

Investigators are still looking to speak with anyone who may have been in the area of Merrimac Drive around the time of the shooting.
