Guy Lafleur sees Patrick Roy as Habs GM, not coach

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur isn’t among those who believe former all-star goaltender Patrick Roy should be the team’s next coach.

Lafleur says Roy’s emotion and frankness would make him too inviting a target for the media, especially after a defeat.

Lafleur told The Canadian Press that Roy would be better suited as general manager.

He also said Tuesday he welcomed the decision by Habs owner Geoff Molson to hire former GM Serge Savard to help in the search for a successor to the recently fired Pierre Gauthier.

The Canadiens will also probably be looking for a new coach this summer to replace interim coach Randy Cunneyworth.

Lafleur was speaking at an event to raise awareness about children’s mental health.
