MONCTON – Moncton’s immigration strategy officer says a public meeting on Thursday evening will look at various ways local residents can help Syrian refugees.
Angelique Reddy-Kalala says people have been asking about ways to help since the crisis was reported.
“What we want to do is provide information to the community on how they can help either locally or internationally,” she said. “I think resident are just ready to open their arms and we want to provide that information to them.”

Gail Brownlee will representing the Red Cross at the event and says the donations are among the best ways to help their teams working with refugees abroad.
“For people that are coming from areas that are prone to violence and that type of thing when they see the red vest and the red cross symbol they know we’re there to help,” she said.
Other groups in the province have already pitched in to help. The Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches is aiming to privately sponsor 50 refugees in Atlantic Canada.
Paul Carline is the Convention’s Director of Intercultural Ministries and says he will also be at the meeting to speak about private sponsorship.
“There are a lot of questions around the process and what needs to be in place before and after an application can be submitted,” he said.
The meeting will take place at Edith Cavell School from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
