REGINA – A Saskatchewan man is trying to deal with rising veterinarian bills after three of his dogs had a nasty encounter with a porcupine.

The three pups were outside when they started wrestling with a porcupine, and one of the dogs – Mahola – took the worst of the damage.

After the tussle, Mahola required extensive surgery to remove quills from her heart and lungs.

Two of the other dogs suffered porcupine quills under their muzzles, but their injuries are not as serious as Mahola’s.

The dog’s owner has taken time off work to be in Saskatoon with Mahola while she undergoes her surgeries.

Friends of the dog owner set up a GoFund Me page to try and raise $10,000 to help with vet bills – by Wednesday morning that goal had been exceeded by more than $1000.
