Bomb scare in Quebec schools possibly linked to teacher protests

MONTREAL – Schools across the province, including in Dorval, Beaconsfield, Ville Saint-Laurent, Ahuntsic and Rivière-des-Prairies are on high alert due to possible bomb threats.

“Some school boards have received e-mails with bomb threats,” said Jean-Pierre Brabant with Montreal police.

Brabant told Global News that, at the beginning of the investigation, the idea was “floating around that it was linked to the [teacher] protests.”

According to Lester B. Pearson School Board chairperson Suanne Stein Day, the threats suggested the person or persons were angry over the teacher strike action.

“Yes, we received one email through our website, threatening schools in Quebec and Ontario,” Stein Day told Global News.

Stein Day told Global News the board has no information about which schools would be targeted.

“At this point, the school remains open. There has been no direct threat,” said Erik Olsthoorn, Principal of Dorval Elementary, adding that all the kids are still in class.

“Police are actively investigating. We are remaining in contact with the school board.”

Schools in the English Montreal School Board did not receive a threat and have not been affected, according to spokesperson Mike Cohen.

Some schools in the Outaouais, Sept-Îles, Western Quebec and Abitibi-Témiscamingue have already been evacuated.

Gatineau police searched and secured four primary schools in the Aylmer district, but would not say how many schools were targeted.

The Sûreté du Québec is investigating.

WATCH: Ruth Ahern, Assistant Director General, Western Quebec School Board tells Global News the schools were closed out of an abundance of caution and that she believes the facilities are safe for students.
