Caught on camera: 7-year-old Michigan student handcuffed by police for ‘intent’ on harming self, others

The mother of a seven-year-old Flint, Mich. student is upset and demanding answers as to why her son was placed in handcuffs by police.

Chrystal McCadden, the mother of the unidentified boy, told WEYI News she received a phone call from her son’s school, Brownell STEM Academy, on Oct. 12 asking for her to come to the school to retrieve her child. She was also told he was placed in handcuffs.

“He don’t deserve to be in no handcuffs, he ain’t in here with no knife, he ain’t in her with no gun,” McCadden told WEYI.

According to a statement by the Flint police department to WEYI: “An officer was dispatched to Brownell STEM Academy in response to an urgent call for immediate assistance with a child who appeared intent on injuring himself, as well as repeatedly assaulting others.”

It is not known exactly how the boy was allegedly trying to harm himself and those around him.

McCadden says her son has ADHD, a condition that includes symptoms such as impulsivity and hyperactivity, but that he isn’t a violent child.

When McCadden asked the officer to remove the handcuffs from her son, the officer allegedly told her he didn’t have a key.

“You put my son in handcuffs and you don’t have the key? What sense does that make?” McCadden told WEYI.

The seven-year-old was eventually released.
