Hidden camera captures woman taking all her neighbour’s Halloween candy

There’s a scene in the 1994 film Clerks where a convenience store clerk leaves the register unattended, save for a bowl of change and a sign asking customers to “be honest”.

When asked how he can be so trusting, he replies that when people see something left unattended next to a sign, they assume they’re being watched, thus ensuring “honesty through paranoia”.

One San Diego woman should probably have been a little more honest – or at least, a little more paranoid – after a hidden camera captured her making off with all her neighbour’s Halloween candy.

Nathan Brown and his fellow housemates decided to set up a little social experiment Halloween night, leaving a large quantity of candy unattended on the front porch of their home in Serra Mesa.

Next to the candy was a sign reading “Help yourself, but please be considerate.”

“We thought we`ll leave some candy out…of course people are going to help themselves to a lot, but it’ll be fun to see who takes what,” Brown told Fox 5 News in San Diego.

The idea was to see what type of portions children would take, but a hidden camera near the candy ended up catching a grown up in the act of taking, literally, all the available candy.

In the video, we see a woman arrive with a young boy as other children are grabbing some candy. She waits until the other kids have left before grabbing all the remaining candy and heading off.

“The fact she told [the boy] to take more [candy] bums me out about the whole situation,” Brown said. “It’s a bad example for the kids.”

The woman in the video has not been identified, and would likely not face any charges – after all, the sign did say to “help yourself”.

The video has since gone viral after it was uploaded to YouTube, with more than two million views as of this writing.
