Christians mark Good Friday with Way of the Cross

Hundreds of Christians gathered in Edmonton’s inner city to mark Good Friday with the Way of the Cross.

They marched to remember the suffering and death of Jesus Christ and raise awareness of the plight of the poor.

“This walk calls me to reflect on what I think Christianity means,” says Donna Koziak.

“It’s a way of taking our faith and our belief and taking it out onto the street,” adds Roy Berkenbosch.

It’s not just about faith as many in the march are putting a focus on helping the poor. They say they aren’t hearing much about the issue during the provincial election campaign.

“I haven’t heard anything,” says Roman Catholic Chaplain Leslie Crowley, “I’ve just heard them, basically making nasty comments about each other.”

“There was more talk about social justice before it started than there is now,” says Koziak.

While the Way of Cross is not meant to be a political statement, many hope the message of hope for those in need is heard and acted upon by the politicians.

The Way of the Cross has been annual tradition in our city for the past 32 years.
