Nova Scotia Power is warning residents of pre-paid credit card phone scam

Nova Scotia Power is warning customers of a phone scam. Nova Scotia Power

HALIFAX – If you’ve gotten a call from a Nova Scotia Power (NSP) representative demanding money via pre-paid credit card, it’s likely a scam, according to NSP.

NSP says customers have been receiving calls from someone who claims the customer owes money on their account and must immediately pay the balance or their power will be disconnected.

The caller tells the person to buy a pre-paid credit card, and then to phone a 1-888 or 1-866 number to make their payment.

These fraudulent calls are also being made to customers of other electric utilities across Canada.

NSP says the company would never call out of the blue and issue an ultimatum on the first contact, and although they do accept credit card payments, they do not accept pre-paid credit.

Any customers who are suspicious about a payment request are asked to call the NSP Customer Care Centre immediately at 1-800-428-6230 to confirm it’s legitimate.

They also say customers should call police to report any attempted fraud.
