A Calgary man is dead after a helicopter crash in Saskatchewan. Police say it happened Tuesday evening one kilometre southeast of Kinley, about 40 kilometres west of Saskatoon.
According to an incident report posted by Transport Canada, the pilot “reported entering severe icing” to the Saskatoon air traffic control tower. The tower received no further communication and the helicopter descended below radar coverage.
Kinley area residents say they can concur that weather conditions were less than ideal at the time of the crash and that it was windy, overcast and cold on Tuesday evening just before 8 p.m.
The name of the 48-year-old pilot killed in the crash has not been released.
The Bell 206B helicopter, owned by Elephant Enterprises Inc., was travelling from Calgary to Saskatoon at the time.
The Transportation Safety Board is expected at the scene on Wednesday to start combing through the wreckage. There is no word on the exact cause of the crash but officials with the organization say they can appreciate that people will want answers but it’s investigation needs to be thorough. Every investigation is different and each one comes with an array of challenges said a spokesperson on Wednesday.
It’s the second fatal helicopter crash in Saskatchewan in the past week.

Last Thursday, two men were killed when their helicopter crashed onto an island in the North Saskatchewan River near Paynton.
