Calgary Zoo high-fiving after tiger mom gives birth to 3 tiny cubs

CALGARY – The Calgary Zoo is home to three new tigers.

Eleven-year-old Katja gave birth to the tiny Amur cubs on Friday morning, each weighing about 750 grams.

The births are potentially great news for the highly-endangered species – there are only about 350 to 400 Amur tigers in the world.

Officials note that high mortality rates are common in tiger births, but they are hoping the three survive.

The sex of the cubs is not known yet.

The zoo has infrared cameras in the tiger den so they can monitor the cubs and Katja’s behaviour without disturbing them.

So far, say zoo officials, mom is doing everything right.
