Homicide unit investigating suspicious death of 2 women in northeast Calgary

CALGARY – Global News has identified the owner of a Coventry Hills home where two people were found dead Monday morning.

Emergency crews were called to check on the welfare of a person in the 200 block of Coventry Close N.E. at about 10 a.m.

Police said one of the victims is in her 50s, while the other is in her 20s.

Sources told Global News Monday the owner of the home is a caregiver for mental health patients. Sources said she had been taking care of two men in her home and that a woman and one of those men were found dead. However, police said Tuesday both victims were women.

Global News has since identified the homeowner as Selamawit Alem, who moved from Hidden Valley to the Coventry neighbourhood in summer 2014.

Global News spoke with Alem in 2006, following the death of her 18-year-old son. Michael Kahsai’s body was found in a Forest Lawn basement in October 2005. He had been bludgeoned to death with a meat cleaver. Alem was disappointed the man convicted of manslaughter in the death would serve only seven years behind bars.

Alem was believed to be taking care of two mental health patients in her home: a woman in her 20s and a man believed to be in his 40s.

Autopsies are underway for the victims. Their identities and the causes of death will not be released until they are complete.

Police do not believe that the incident is random.
