REGINA – Arcola Community School and Mother Teresa Middle School received a boost to their music programs on Tuesday.

In an assembly at Arcola, Casino Regina donated $40,000 to the Regina Symphony Orchestra’s (RSO) Strings for Change Program. In this program students take weekly group violin lessons from professional musicians.

“The sponsorship is really meaningful to us because it allows us to hire teachers to come work in schools and provide students an opportunity to really learn to play an instrument, engage in music with the music community, which will really impact the rest of their lives,” said RSO executive director Tanya Derksen.

Grade two Arcola students were presented with violins they will use throughout the year. Grade seven and eight students from Mother Teresa wrapped up the assembly with a performance of “Ode to Joy”.

Strings for Change was launched in 2013, and now reaches over 7,000 students across southern Saskatchewan every year.
