TORONTO – Lanni Marchant crossed the finish line at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon nine seconds shy of her Canadian marathon record.
Marchant finished today’s race in a time of two hours 28 minutes nine seconds, just shy of her record mark of 2:28.00 set here in 2013.
The 31-year-old from London, Ont., qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics with her time.
Nineteen-year-old Shure Demise of Ethiopia won in 2:23:37.
On the men’s side, Eric Gillis of Guelph, Ont., qualified for Rio with a time of 2:11:31.
Ishhimael Chemtan of Kenya finished first in 2:09:00.
