Remains of canoeist missing since 1979 positively identified in Ontario

TORONTO — After two years, Ontario Provincial Police have positively identified a human skull found near the shores of James Bay as a Moose Factory, Ont. as a canoeist missing since 1979.

On May 8, 2013, officers responded to a report of a skull found at an area called East Point, near James Bay, about 120 kilometres north of Moosonee, Ont. near Hannah Bay.

OPP investigators, forensic unit, the Eeyou Eenou police and a forensic anthropologist from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services Ontario Forensic Pathology Service in Toronto have been working to identify the remains ever since.

The remains have been positively identified as Peter Hester of Moose Factory after the lengthy investigation.

Hester was 32-years-old when he was reported missing on Aug. 24, 1979 while travelling by canoe from the James Bay coast to Moosonee.

Police said that his death has not been deemed suspicious and no foul play is suspected.
