Alberta mother with MS gets to keep her children at home

An Alberta mother with Multiple Sclerosis is optimistic she’ll get the help she needs to keep her two daughters at home.

On Monday, the Minister of Human Services, Dave Hancock directed his department to find a solution to keep Marie’s family together, and on Tuesday she was visited by Child and Family Services workers.

Marie says she’s extremely relieved to hear they’re offering to set up a staff caregiver for the girls, in her home.

“Oh, I can’t wait to see their little bodies on their own beds sleeping. They’ll probably sleep with mom but that’s ok, I love them,” Marie says with a huge sigh of relief adding, “They’re going to have someone come in for bedtime and supper until eight in the morning until they go to daycare and school.”

The fear of losing her children because she couldn’t care for them alone, made Marie lose her faith in government and humanity.

Within hours of finding out about Marie, people from across Canada contacted Global News to offer to help.

“It’s amazing, the people, volunteers, have been tremendous and I love it. It’s renewed my faith in humanity,” Marie explains.

She is cautious however, that this may only be a short term solution.

“I’m not going to get better tomorrow and I still want the girls with me,” Marie says adding, “It’s a short term solution for them. I need something regular.”

Marie expects her girls to be home by next week or the following week. She has hopes of starting a foundation that will help parents with MS find support and keep their families together.
