NEAR BALGONIE – Dozens of riders and horses saddled up for an afternoon out on the open prairie Thanksgiving Monday.
“We’re starting from here, across the road and we go through the field and down a couple back roads and back through some fields and back again,” Wina Lechner explained from her farm east of Balgonie.
She’s organized this trail ride for the last 17 years, creating a different take on the annual Terry Fox “Run.”

“I like doing it with the horses. We enjoy riding and there’s a lot of other people who enjoy trail rides, so any excuse you have to go for a ride, it’s a good thing and you raise money at the same time,” Lechner said.
Every year, the ride raises between $500 and $700 for the Terry Fox Foundation, an important charity for many of the participants.
“I’ve got a lot of family members who’ve had cancer so it’s nice to support. We really like the Terry Fox Foundation. It’s a great cause,” said Arleen Lanaway.
“It’s a great reason to get together and enjoy the horses and the people and the food afterwards,” said another participant, Laurel Golemba.
