Mulcair, Harper campaigning, Trudeau takes a break with 8 days until voting

OTTAWA – It’s another low key day on the campaign trail as the party leaders trim their schedules before the final spurt toward election day next week.

The NDP’s Tom Mulcair continues to drum up support on Vancouver Island with stops in Nanaimo and Courtenay.

Mulcair is taking heart in a report from Election Canada that the opening day of advance polls on Friday saw a 26 per cent increase in voter turnout over the 2011 campaign.

Mulcair says the higher turnout is a sign that voters are looking for change and want to topple the governing Conservatives.

Conservative leader Stephen Harper was off the campaign trail yesterday so his finance minister quarterbacked the Tory electioneering.
