Elections Canada estimates 850K people voted on 1st day of advance polls

There were still some long lines at voting stations in Vancouver on Saturday. Global News

It’s day two of advance voting in the federal election and more long waits are once again being reported at some polling stations.

At Yaletown Roundhouse Saturday afternoon, voters were told the wait was at least an hour long, but most appeared to take the wait in stride.

Elections Canada estimates about 850,000 people voted on Friday, on the first day of advance polls. That’s a 26 per cent increase over the first day of advance polls in the 2011 election, and a 90 per cent increase over the first day of advance polls in 2008.

There have been concerns that the recent changes to election laws to tighten ID requirements could create snags for certain Canadians.

“For the Fair Election process they were saying that they need to handwrite a lot of the information and that’s what’s taking longer to keep us from doing this three times it seems,” said one voter.
