Elections Canada is dealing with a hiccup in west-central Saskatchewan. A fire at an advance polling station in Wilkie, Sask. has caused them to close the venue ahead of the 42nd federal election.

According to Elections Canada, everyone made it out safe and there were no injuries.

The agency says they were also able to grab the ballot box before the evacuation.

“There was a fire yesterday late afternoon at the Wilkie community centre. We don’t know the cause but there was lots of smoke, so it was decided to evacuate the building and everybody is safe,” said Marie-France Kenny, a regional media advisor with Elections Canada.

“We were able to secure another polling station right away.”

Voters were able to cast their ballots Saturday at the town hall at 206 2nd Ave. West in Wilkie. The new polling station will also be open Sunday and Monday from noon to 8 p.m. CT.
