Port Moody family plans huge Thanksgiving dinner for those displaced by fire

A Port Moody family has decided to enlist the help of their friends, neighbours and community to cook and serve a Thanksgiving dinner for at least 100 people.

They were all residents of the Mountain View Co-op Housing that caught fire last week. Two buildings and more than 50 units were evacuated, with many people losing everything they owned.

Chantal Falk doesn’t know any of the people personally, but her heart went out to those in her community who wouldn’t get to spend Thanksgiving in their homes.

So she decided to do something about it.

“I didn’t have any plans for Thanksgiving weekend,” she said. “And I thought I should do something because I can.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

So Falk called upon her network and Port Moody to help and she said she has been overwhelmed by the response.

“My girlfriends are working all day in their kitchen cooking,” she said. “Friends and neighbours have dropped off donations. It’s so amazing.”

Businesses in the community have also stepped up.

Thrifty’s and IGA are donating groceries, along with Meat Craft Urban Butchery, COBS, The Pastry Box, and The Christine Catering Company, to name a few.

One Stop Party Rentals is donating items like dishes so everyone can eat and Vivio Flower Gallery is making sure there are fresh flowers on the tables.

Falk said it is a real community event.

Right now it is estimated there are about 100 to 125 people coming to the dinner, which will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. in one of the co-op buildings not damaged by fire.

“We just want to make it special for everyone,” said Falk.
