REGINA – Some federal conservative candidates in Saskatchewan reaffirmed their party’s support of oil and gas development Thursday.

At an event held at TESCO Industries, Regina-Qu’Appelle candidate Andrew Scheer said projects like the Energy East pipeline are important to the province’s economy.

“Those are projects that need to be approved, they need a champion in Ottawa,” he said.  “Regina can’t afford to have members of parliament in Ottawa opposing the very industry that employ so many people in our city.”

Scheer was joined by Regina-Lewvan conservative candidate Trent Fraser, and Regina-Wascana candidate Mike Kram.

There were also some industry players on hand, including Gavin Semple, Brandt chairman who said some parties’ policies could be detrimental to Saskatchewan.

“I think there’s a lot of risk. The energy industry is under a lot of stress and pressure because of prices..  The last thing we need is a political party who wants to, in effect, kill the pipeline industry,” he said.

Both the Regina-Qu’Appelle NDP and Liberal candidates said their parties are not opposed to oil and gas development, as the conservatives say.

Nyle Kuyek said the NDP party has been clear that natural resource development needs to include an environmental review process, and adequate community consultation.

Meantime, Liberal candidate Dolata Wojciech said it’s about sticking a balance between economic development and being mindful of environment assessments.
