Woman says mother being discharged from Victoria General due to flooding

WINDSOR JUNCTION, N.S. – A woman says her elderly mother is being forced out of the Victoria General hospital due to last week’s flooding, but hospital administration disputes that.

“I can confidently say that no patients across our facilities here are being discharged inappropriately due to our flood,” said Karen Mumford, Queen Elizabeth II Health Science Centre’s senior director.

Bernadette Boyd, from Windsor Junction, said the hospital told her that her mother, Helen Mountain, will be sent home due to last Thursday’s flooding.

Mountain, 84, was transferred to Victoria General four weeks ago, having spent another month at another hospital for breathing problems prior. She suffers from a variety of health issues, including dementia.

“It’s really sad when you walk into a hospital room, and your mother looks at you and says, ‘And who are you?’” said Boyd.

She said Mountain was assessed by a physician without a family member present. It was determined that Mountain only requires six hours, split in three shifts, of care per day at her home.

“This is totally unacceptable,” said Boyd, adding that Mountain is set to leave the hospital on Friday. “If they send her home, I’m not sure what’s going to happen, and I guess that will be on their shoulders.”

Mumford described the unit Mountain was in as a “transition unit”.

“Families can always do an inquiry,” she said regarding families disagreeing with a physician’s decision.
