Media scrubs Malia Obama’s Mexico Spring Break trip until earthquake hits

TORONTO – Some media ethics experts are now questioning scrubbing the story about President Obama’s eldest daughter, Malia Obama, vacationing in Mexico.

The White House’s Kristina Schake, Communications Director to the First Lady, admitted to asking media not to report on the vacation. The request prompted some websites (including the Huffington Post) on Tuesday to remove reports about the trip, according to American reports

“From the beginning of the administration, the White House has asked news outlets not to report on or photograph the Obama children when they are not with their parents and there is no vital news interest. We have reminded outlets of this request in order to protect the privacy and security of these girls,” said a White House statement.

Reports on Monday detailed Malia’s vacation, including how many secret service agents were with her, where she was staying and what sightseeing destination she was going to take in.

Things obviously changed on Tuesday afternoon when a 7.6 earthquake hit the region near Acapulco in the state of Guerrero, which shares a border with Oaxaca. The White House quickly released this statement:

“In light of today’s earthquake, we can confirm that Malia Obama is safe and was never in danger.”

Here is some Twitter chatter about Malia being in Mexico.
