WATCH: Deaf Florida boy ‘hears’ music for the first time

When Diane and Robert Allen adopted 12-year-old Alex eight years ago, they didn’t think their son would ever be able to hear.

Alex was born deaf, blind and with severe disability, but the Allens knew they wanted him to be a part of their family.

“Every day we have him, it’s a blessing,” said Diane in an interview with NBC 2.

Alex’s parents say he has a strong will to live, even though he suffers from Stage 4 kidney failure.

That strength was displayed in his classroom at Buckingham Exceptional Student Center earlier this month when he decided to be an active participant in the class’ music therapy session.

“As soon as he felt the vibrations, he just started to hug the instrument,” said Scheetz.

Alex now comes to class ready to clap along and “hear” more music.

“This is a testimony to his strength, his inner core of who he is,” said Diane. “He wants to be here just a little longer.”
