Suspicious package on Halifax Metro Transit bus not a threat

HALIFAX – Police were called to the scene of a possible bomb scare in downtown Halifax, after a suspicious package was found on board a Metro Transit bus.

But, it turns out the package contained nothing but a towel.

Staff Sgt. Reid McCoombs confirmed a call came into Halifax Regional Police around 5:10 p.m. Friday.

Global News reporter Rebecca Lau spoke to the driver who was on Bus #41, which was located on Barrington St. between South and Morris streets at the time the package was discovered.

The drivers says Metro Transit dispatch asked all drivers to check their buses for a suspicious package.

The driver searched under seats and spotted a bag and ordered all passengers out of the bus.

Police cordoned off the bus and evacuated people out of the surrounding area, including those living in two nearby residential buildings.

Police have cleared the scene and the bus is now back in service. Police will continue to investigate the incident.
