Breakfast Buzz: Should hairstyles be part of school dress code?

Fall is the time of year lots of us like to try out a new style. For one little boy in Utah, his new Mohawk was also a representation of his Native American roots. The new haircut however created a bit of a controversy when he went to school.

It was called a distraction by his school, and Jakobe Sanden was told to cut it and pulled from class when he didn’t cut it. His mother took to Facebook saying how she was told her son was not allowed to have a Mohawk because of school policy.

The school district’s dress code says that students are advised to avoid grooming that will cause a distraction.

In the end Sanden was allowed to keep his Mohawk, but only after “jumping through hurdles” his family said. They had to provide a letter from providing documents from tribe elders.
