TTC spokesperson Brad Ross told Global News explained that streetcars are equipped with three separate braking systems, and he’s never heard of a triple failure. Engineers are examining the streetcar itself and Ross said the TTC will talk to the driver to determine the cause of the crash.

“What I can say though is that the age of the fleet is not an issue,” he said.  “The streetcars are safe, the braking systems… are triply safe, so we need to find out what happened here because if we have some sort of issue we’re not familiar with and we’ve never seen before, we need to address that.”
