Vacation prices for Cuba likely to go up

SASKATOON – If you’re thinking of travelling to Cuba anytime soon, you might to book it sooner rather than later. That’s because prices are likely going up.

“In the past our suppliers and tour operators have always secured their hotel contracts for Cuba in Canadian dollars,” said Barbara Crowe, president of Ixtapa Travel.

“Now we know the doors are open between Cuba and the United States,” she told Global News, “and guess what?  Effective October 1st, those contracts are now switching over to U.S. dollars.”

Because of the higher value of the American dollar, that means prices for Canadians are expected to rise somewhere between 20 to 30 per cent.

“Our supplies have told us that yes, we can expect prices to go up the first week in October, so if Cuba is on the list you definitely want to get booked before the end of September,” she said.

Crowe went on to say regardless of price, Cuba has a lot to offer. She said there are numerous flights available for people in Saskatchewan, and lots of options for tours, including cruises, motorcoach tours, even bicycle tours.

“I love Cuba, especially for the people,” said Crowe. “They are so warm and genuine, they’re not pushy, you feel very comfortable being in their country, and they want you in their country. “
