Arson ruled out in Bouctouche fire that claimed the lives of two people

BOUCTOUCHE, N.B. – Arson has been ruled out as the cause of a fire that claimed the lives of two people.

RCMP and the provincial Fire Marshal say the cause of the fire was accidental. The fire occurred on Denis Street in Bouctouche at about 1:40 a.m. on September 7.

Two people, a man and a woman, were able to escape.  The owners of the home say that two other people, a man and women were also in the house at the time of the fire.

The bodies of the two people were located the next day. A 62-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman, both from Simcoe, Ontario, have been identified as the two victims who died in the house fire.

RCMP believe the couple were unable to escape and may have died in the fire after being overcome by smoke and heat or as a result of  being trapped inside.

One of the victims who survived has been treated and released from hospital, while the other remains in serious condition.

The investigation is continuing.
