Police in Abbotsford investigate two overnight crashes

It’s been a busy night for police investigators in Abbotsford. Two separate crashes have sent four people to hospital.

A man is in police custody this morning after allegedly stealing a woman’s car while she filled it up at an Abbotsford gas station.

Early reports had suggested the incident may have been a carjacking. It happened around 2:30 this morning at McCallum and Marshall Roads. Police say the man noticed the keys were still in the car, jumped in and sped off.

Moments later, he slammed into an SUV and then crashed into a nearby building.

Both drivers were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police say the man has a lengthy criminal record in Alberta and may have been trying to get to Vancouver Island.

Meanwhile, a head-on crash in Abbotsford has sent two people to hospital.

Emergency crews were called out to Old Yale Road and Saint Moritz Way around 11:30 last night.

When they arrived, they found a woman trapped inside a red car and a man upside down in a flipped pickup truck.

It took 45 minutes to free the woman from the car. She’s been airlifted to hospital in serious condition.

The driver of the truck has also been taken to hospital. No word on his condition.

Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the crash.
