What’s in a name? Concerns arise over LFL’s choice for Regina’s team name

As young entrepreneurs, Leah Mazur and Alyshia Chobot worked hard to build their brand Rage Regina. It plans and promotes cultural events. But they are concerned a similarly named Lingerie Football League (LFL) team in Regina, the Regina Rage, may hurt their business.

“It will be really hard to differentiate the Rage Regina girls and the Regina Rage girls, so we just don’t want to be associated or confused with them,” Chobot explained.

The pair worries anyone looking for more information online about their company may get the wrong idea.

“We work with a lot of bands across the country, and for them, if they’re searching for us and trying to find out who we are, they might think we’re part of the football league,” Mazur said.

They are not the only ones with concerns. Sarah Surkan coached an under-12 ringette team, which is also known as the Rage.

“A lot of the girls told me they don’t want to wear their team clothing anymore because all it says is Rage and they think they’re supporting the Lingerie League team,” Surkan said.

“The name is tainted for them now, and they don’t want anything to do with it.”

On the football field, the Calgary Rage Women’s Tackle Football team plays a hard fought game, but a battle against the LFL is not one it is about to venture into. Still, the team is choked about the choice for the Regina team’s name.

“It’s just kind of a respect thing I guess, being that they knew we existed,” Stephanie Janes, tight end and defensive end for the team. “We’ve had many conversations with the guy who runs the LFL and he knows that we’re out there, so it’s a little bit of a step on our toes.”

Not everyone has complaints about the name. The Regina Rage Rugby Club is willing to give cross-promotion a try.

“We just sat down and realized, we’re either going to embrace this opportunity and hope for recruitment out of this or we’re going to sit back and just let it be what it is,” Krista Culling, President of the Regina Rage Rugby Club said.

“We don’t control who can bear our name, the Regina Rage.”

The LFL was not available for comment on Friday but the name was the most popular of the over 7,000 names submitted to the league for the Regina team.
