TORONTO – Beck Taxi wants Toronto City Hall to bring down the cost of fares for what the company says is “one of the most expensive meter rates in Canada.”
An online petition has been launched to lobby city official to make fares more affordable and reasonable.
“Beck has listened to riders and fully agrees they should have access to more affordable fares that compete with alternative services,” said Kristine Hubbard, Operations Manager at Beck Taxi, in a media release.
“City Hall is currently reviewing ground transportation regulations and we’d like pricing to be a meaningful part of that discussion.”

Toronto’s current fares are $4.25 upon entry, $0.25 for every 0.143 km and every 29 seconds of waiting time.
Beck Taxi says it wants both the entry price and in-transit fares to drop.
“Beck believes that riders are using alternative for-hire vehicle services because they are cheaper, drawing riders away from licensed taxis,” said the company.

Earlier this summer, an Ontario judge dismissed an application to halt the ride-hailing service Uber from operating in the city.
But the taxi industry remains convinced Uber is consciously flouting the law by keeping its drivers on the road.
Toronto Mayor John Tory said a proposal for a new bylaw is in the works that promises to level the playing field for both Uber and cab drivers.
