EDMONTON – Firefighters were called to an electrical fire in southeast Edmonton on Monday morning.

Crews responded just after 7:30 a.m. to 2723 33 Street NW, where huge showers of sparks and plumes of smoke could be seen coming from the side of the single family home in the Silver Berry neighbourhood.

Brad Kitiuk with Edmonton Fire Rescue said the house was still charged when crews arrived. He said it was an unusual fire.

“We’re not in the habit of turning off power, short of the main metre inside, the circuit breaker inside,” said Kitiuk.

“So because it’s coming from an external source, the crews wouldn’t use water on the fire. They ended up using extinguishers to try and manage the fire until such time as EPCOR was on scene and able to shut off and confirm that the house was safe for us to enter and extinguish.”

The fire appeared to be brought under control within half an hour. Kitiuk said it will be up to EPCOR to figure out how and why the fire started.

“The house will be out of service until EPCOR does a full assessment of the damage to the external metre and the internal circult box,” Kitiuk said.

Those living in the home are expected to be displaced until after the assessment.
