TORONTO – The pilot of a small plane is dead after it crashed in a field near Stoney Creek Airport in Hamilton, Ont. Friday morning.

Emergency crews arrived on scene shortly after 7 a.m. to find wreckage in a soybean field next to the airport located at 684 Mud St. E. between 6th Road East and 7th Road East.

Transportation Safety Board authorities wrapped up their investigation at the site late Friday.

Don Enns, manager of TSB’s Ontario regional office, said the plane experienced an “aerodynamic stall” shortly after takeoff, which caused the crash.

Enns said investigators did not find any “pre-impact failures” or faults with the plane, which was a single propeller aircraft called a BD-4 that was built from a kit in 1972.

The plane was en route to St Thomas, Ont. and the deceased has not been identified pending notification of next of kin. No passengers were aboard the aircraft at the time of the crash.
