City looks for solutions to get Great Divide Waterfall running again

The city of Edmonton is looking at solutions to get the Great Divide Waterfall on the High Level Bridge working again.

The waterfall has not been operational for the past three years after the city received a notice from Environment Canada ordering it shut down.

The order was made because the waterfall dumps large amounts of chlorinated water into the North Saskatchewan River.

Environment Canada is concerned about the amount of chlorine being added to the river system.

Fixing the problem could cost a lot of money and could become quite complicated so the city is

“We need to go back to the federal government what is the implication of this,” Mayor Stephen Mandel told council. “I think that would be the first step and then we can see whether we can negotiate something different.”

That could take a while, so residents shouldn’t expect to see the waterfall in use any time soon.
