EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos have traded quarterback Matt Nichols to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
In exchange for Nichols, the Eskimos have received a seventh round pick in the 2017 draft.
The team’s GM was asked how Nichols reacted to hearing about the trade.
“I think that’ll be between he and I,” said Ed Hervey. “He was not upset.
“I’ve known him for a long time and I explained to him, ‘this move for you, personally, is a good thing.'”
“I think there was some relief just knowing the situation,” added Hervey.
“He’s no fool. He sees that Mike is on his way back… where would his place be on this football team? I think he thought about that and, understanding the situation, it made it best for him to accept it and move on.”
Nichols was named the Eskimos starting quarterback early in the season when Mike Reilly was injured, but rookie James Franklin took over the job last week. In that game, Franklin threw for 335 yards and a touchdown in a win against Toronto.
Reilly is scheduled to come off the injured list Wednesday night.
Nichols signed with Edmonton in October 2010. During his tenure with the club, he appeared in 45 games, starting in 12 contests, passing for 3,386 yards and 19 touchdowns with 18 interceptions.
This season, the 28-year-old has passed for 1,488 yards, eight touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
