TORONTO- If you’ve never used an Allen key, the concept of an entire home designed by the Swedish ‘do-it-yourself’ furniture giant IKEA should frighten you.
If the opposite is true, you’ll be glad to learn that now you can assemble an entire IKEA concept home. Well, sort of.
Oregon-based Ideabox, which makes environmentally friendly manufactured homes, introduced the Ikea-inspired “Aktiv” design home at Portland’s Home and Garden Show last week.
According to Ideabox, they worked with the design team at Ikea’s Portland store to come up with the home design. The home is designed to be outfitted entirely with IKEA furniture and features, like their low-cost laminate counter-tops and kitschy lamps.

The design includes energy-efficient lighting features, Ikea’s usual space-saving furnishings, and the exterior features a combination of fibre cement, corrugated metal siding, a seamed metal roof and storage space.
“For those of us IKEA fans, the pure delight of walking and imagining our way through an IKEA store quickly turns to the daunting task of assembly when we get home” said Ideabox’s site. “Not a worry… When your ideabox aktiv arrives, all of the cabinets, countertops, and flooring are installed… it’s like the best of everything!”
From order to delivery, the home will take about eight weeks, with two to three of those weeks occupied by building time.
The home is 745 square feet and will set you back about U.S. $86,000. IKEA is already making pre-fab homes called BokLok for European customers. The new Aktiv homes, Swedish for “active,” will be the company’s first foray into the U.S. market of pre-fab homes.
