REGINA – Beginning September 1, expect to pay more for power in Saskatchewan.
SaskPower is increasing its rate by two per cent, which works out to about $20 more per year for residential customers.
During its most recent rate application, SaskPower was approved for a five per cent increase but at the time the province announced the rate would only go up by three per cent.
On Friday, SaskPower announced its implementing the remaining two per cent.
“Today, we’re seeing that the people of Saskatchewan are paying the price for something that the province said SaskPower wouldn’t do, which was take that extra two per cent,” said Warren McCall, NDP House Leader. “So the cost of living is going up yet again for people in Saskatchewan.”
SaskPower says the rate increase is needed to maintain aging infrastructure, handle a new peak demand for 2015, and repair damage from storms and wildfires.
“The full increase is needed to continue to provide reliable and sustainable power for the people of Saskatchewan,” said SaskPower President and CEO Mike Marsh in a news release.
