LETHBRIDGE – Powering up the rides and rolling out the games is just another day for Bob Hauser.

The West Coast Amusement owner has been coming to Whoop Up Days for the last 22 years. Out of all his summer stops, Lethbridge is one of his favourites.

Last year the exhibition grounds had the worst attendance in Whoop Up history, but that was not the case this week. Hauser said attendance doubled, making this one of the more successful years for the fair.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We compare to 2013, that was a pretty nice year, and we were up from 2013, so that’s great,” he explained. “We had a great turnout. They ate, they had fun playing games, they rode the rides until the cows came home.”

Even with better numbers, last year’s wicked weather still had organizers nervous.

“To get five days of rain and maybe two thirds of the audience we usually do, it took us a month to get over,” said Doug Kryzanowski with Exhibition Park.

However, this week has proven to be a whooping success.

“We got a great package and we appreciate the support of southern Alberta,” Kryzanowski added.

Hauser said he hopes to never again see the historically low turnout of 2014.

“It’s like an entertainer doing his show: you do your best, but when it’s a full house you just give it all you’ve got. It’s just so much more fun,” he said.
