A release from the service says the lockdown will help ensure the safety and security of the institution, inmates and staff.

Visits have been suspended until the search is complete at the facility on the northern outskirts of the city, which is rated to hold up to 228 male inmates.

The release says the correctional service is working to prevent contraband from coming into institutions, but gave no further details.

Earlier this year lockdowns were ordered at the Edmonton Institution on July 14, April 9, April 1, Jan. 19 and Jan. 9.
