SUV driver dies in Calgary Stoney Trail crash

CALGARY – A man is dead after a crash between his SUV and a semi-truck on Wednesday afternoon.

EMS were called to the westbound lanes of Stoney Trail at approximately Sarcee Trail N.W. at about 2:30 p.m.

Calgary police said a 60-year-old man was driving a Kenworth semi-tractor towing two tanker trailers westbound on Stoney Trail N.W. He was driving in the far right lane at approximately 35 to 40 km/h.

At the same time, police said a 54-year-old man was driving a 2015 Ford Expedition SUV behind the semi-tractor. He drove into the rear of the trailer at a high rate of speed; police said a medical condition may have contributed to his actions.

The SUV driver was determined deceased on scene by paramedics. His SUV sustained significant damage.

No other people were injured.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area as it was expected to be closed for a few hours.
